Felucca changes and you.
Posted February 20, 2002 - 9:41 PM PST by Adam Ant
Well by now you’ve probably heard that there are some major changes in store for Felucca residents.
Some of the proposed changes are: Reds cannot ban from their house, blues can set a no red may enter policy on their house, and my personal favorite; If you're red, then all five of your characters will be come red!
Aye Carumba!
Okay. What most players are doing now is dicing the proposal this way and that trying to make sense out of it.
I would however like to take a slightly different approach.
Firstly I would like to put the proposal aside for a second and look at the fundamentals that are driving the proposal.
The Fundamentals I'm speaking of are the truths about why something is being done and not necessarily what is being done.
The Fundamentals:
1. More Money
2. Reduced Risk=More Money
Now the first one I have no problem with. Oh sure, it's easy to call OSI greedy and money grubbing, but the truth is that they are a business first and the game is simply their product. There's nothing wrong with wanting to make more money, it's simply the reality of running a business.
Now if these two Fundamentals hold true, it doesn't matter what complaints or logical counter proposals we make, as long as Reduced Risk=More Money, then reds in Sosaria are toast. If Long Noses and Jester Hats=More Money then we will all be wearing long noses and jester hats.
What we need to do is prove that:
1. Reduced Risk=Less Money
2. Increased Reward=More Money
Up until this point, OSI has postulated that: "one of the problems in the game is that risk is too high in Felucca, and by reducing risk, we will gain new customers and therefore make More Money."
Heh, this is true enough.
However, it's more complicated than that!
Life is only as sweet as death is painful.
Please, say that a few times and you will see where I'm going (I know. it's a long journey!)
THE RISK IN FELUCCA IS PERFECT.
Yup, the risk in Felucca is already plenty painful and therefore perfect.
What OSI needs to realize is that they should be breaking new ground rather than following the second-place competition.
The Answer:
Life is only as sweet as death is painful.
Leave the risk alone and increase the reward!
By sufficiently increasing the reward: rares, ore, reagents, and other goods, you (OSI) keeps the very aspect of Ultima Online that makes it stand out from the rest.
If you instead go for the short term burst of new accounts, you will be sorely disappointed in 6-9 months when your competition steals all of your customers with a truly compelling good vs evil system.
What I'm telling you OSI is to see the forest and not simply the trees!
Think longer term and not always quick money.
As I've been saying for a long, long time:
1. Angel Island to get Criminals off the streets (while keeping them engaged)
2. Create a mutual dependence via commerce between Trammel and Felucca.
