Adam Ant's Quest #VI – The Bounty
Posted April 10, 2002 - 11:12 PM PDT by Jade
Hello Guardians,
Duo Maxwell has placed a bounty on our Lord Guardian's head; a bounty so grand that it will surely bring hordes of greedy adventurers who wish to hunt Adam Ant and collect his bounty.
As I'm sure you know, threats on his life or huge bounties on his head will not discourage Adam from carrying out his sworn duty to watch over the Undead Lords. He will be patrolling the halls of Shame on Friday night and we, the Guardians, will need to be present to make sure that he is not bothered by any bounty hunters.
We must not let the dungeon become overrun with fortune seekers who would threaten the lives of the Red Mages or that of our Lord Guardian, Adam Ant.
I ask that you prepare yourselves for battle, Guardians, and join me in protecting Adam as he patrols the dungeon.
I hope to see you all there,
Jade

Mace Beatdowns Part II
Posted April 3, 2002 - 10:25 PM PST by Kamikaze
As promised and surprisingly enough on time is Part two of the Macer Parrier Essay. All 1700 words worth! Enjoy. To see Part One take a trip to the PvP Library.
THE MOST IMPORTANT PART TO PLAYING A Parry Macer I) Paitence II) Fast Fingers (And Macro setup)
i) As I mentioned last time: The macer parrier is about outlasting your opponent. Wait till your foe is weakest, namely low on resources and armor before you really begin to press your advantage. If you take too many chances too soon you may be the one sounding a “death-moan”.
ii) The main advantage you have against warriors is your ability to absorb massive amounts of dmg. Parry is an utterly effective skill but ONLY if your shield is equipped. Smart people WILL attempt to poison you as often as they can to force you to unequip the shield. So you must become proficient at disarming the shield drinking a potion then reequipping in the minimum amount of time. When you master this technique the entire sequence should take less then three seconds.
You also have a wide variety of weapons available to you and should use them as the situation dictates. If your opponent is at low health and the war axe isn’t cutting don’t be afraid to switch to the war hammer – Heck pre-cast poison first if you can. They’ll expect that you aren’t skilled, they will call you a newb and lamer, use that to your advantage, mix things up surprise them, and take ultimate consolation in victory.
SPECIAL TECHNIQUES DESCRIBED IN THE ESSAY:
i) Precasting: Precasting is the process of casting a spell then equipping a weapon, dealing dmg with that weapon and subsequently targeting your opponent or yourself with the spell. My favourite spell to precast is with a Macer parrier is poison, MB is also effective. Most successful when used in tandem with the war hammer
ii) Fastcasting: The technique for circumventing the spell delay timer when casting consecutive spells. There are many good essays describing the process in full (I suggest Tapion’s which is hosted by UOPG), but for the convenience of you my reader I will explain the process in short. There is a 2.2 second delay in addition to any casting delay imposed between casting two spells. To circumvent this delay simply cast your desired spell and do not target until 2.2 seconds have elapsed, then instantly cast the next spell and target as soon as the cursor appears (or hold down the last target button or alternatively use the queue target UOA feature). Casting faster means your opponents have less time to heal and will hopefully die more often as a result.
iii) Jousting: The technique of utilizing mobility to exchange blows with your opponent at a ratio approaching 1:1. Your primary jousting weapon will be the War hammer. To use it effectively you must intuitively discern the delay between swings and use that to your advantage. When facing an opponent wielding a faster weapon, run towards them on a course tangent to them. As you run by you will strike, continue running forward, once your timer has reset return and repeat. This will effectively negate weapon speed advantages. For it to work properly you must keep your stamina high!
iv) Spell Disruption: The technique of casting lower level spell with faster casting times to disrupt an opponent casting a higher level spell. Fireball, harm, and debuffs work well at interrupting. If you have a spell precast, you can release it to interrupt a high circle spell your opponent is casting.
v)Bandage disruption: Note when your opponent’s bandage takes effect, look at your own timer and estimate when the next bandage will resolve. Just before it does cast and target the character with a cast poison. He will be unable to cure in time. As a result the bandage will cure the poison but WILL NOT heal needed dmg.
How to fight a(n)…
Mages:
Will be your most difficult opponent. In a perfect world you would remove your armour before fighting. This unfortunately is not practical in most situations. You can set an undress key but BE WARNED while you are undressing - which will take a substantial amount of time – you will be unable to use UOA Macro’s. This often results in death. So instead I propose you wear the suggested armour combo (cited in the Part I). Nine dex loss is not significant, yet the protection is still prime when you face Warriors. Always have magic reflect up, though it may not do anything, some chance of reflecting a spell is better than zero chance. Cast bless as soon as plausible, since bless increases all stats by the same amount (in this case 11) MB dmg will not increase. It will also give you an opportunity to begin the bandage pre-combat, allowing that necessary first heal to take effect that much sooner. (seconds matter)
Parry against a mage is utterly worthless (unless he is a tank mage, which is unlikely) so unequip your shield and leave it that way ASAP.
I suggest initiating combat with the war axe. You will have a free hand to drink potions, you will also suck stm. With bless cast your dex will be equal to 92 which is fast enough to disrupt spells effectively. Keep your stm high so you are swinging at max speed. Stay close to the mage disrupting as much as possible, DON’T let the mage dictate the pace of battle. Drink GC’s immediately, and beware the explosion feint, and fast casting. If your life gets to about a ½ and you’ve drunk a GH already (always drink potions first) then begin casting Lesser heal(s). Lesser heal is not disruptable (which is a good thing since smart mages will run up and wrestle you when you cast).
Once you deem the mage is low on mana you may switch to a Q-staff if you feel comfortable. A Q-Staff’s average Dmg is a little higher but you will swing faster, which means your (DOT) Damage over time is substantially higher. Be warned though, this is a riskier option since it is harder for you to drink potions effectively as you must disarm the Q-staff to do so. Also a smart mage will simple cast poison on you repeatedly. If the mage has a great con you won’t be landing consistent blows anyway so I’d suggest the War axe route.
Once the mage is low on health you can switch to the war hammer, but doing so may give them the opportunity to heal. I find it is in the long run better to stay with the faster hitting weapons and lend no respite.
Ultimately you are looking to run the mage out of TR potions and impede their mobility. Beware the inscription healing mage, you will be forced actively cast Lesser and Greater heal.
Axer
Should not pose much of a problem. Before entering combat with any pure warrior class drink a GA and GS potion and begin the bandage. Equip a shield and your war axe and begin banging away. Ensure you heal regularly, keep yourself buffed and used potions efficiently.
A Smart axer will respond by:
i) Trying to break your shield with a hally. He will use a jousting technique. If he manages to break you shield (it has over 100 hp) then simply equip then next – this is why you have 3. Against a well-prepared parrier macer this tactics is not very successful. Break his armour, make him cringe, suck his stm, in short dominate.
ii) Pulling out a Poisoned Katana. Don’t worry, you have lots of cures, he has a finite number of applications. Don’t panic, drop your shield when required and drink a cure, replace it immediately. DO NOT leave your shield down for extended periods of time. Wait and win.
Once he’s low on resources feel free to experiment. I like to use the bandage disruption technique with a precast poison and a war hammer equipped; hit, then target, then whack him again. This can delay/disrupt heals and two successive large blows can be devastating.
Poison Warrior
This will be your toughest battle against a warrior class. Ensure you have many cures, IF not then you may be on the losing end of this battle. For the most part follow the tactics explained under the Axer heading.
Note though, you will probably NOT be taking large amounts of dmg, even harder hitting weapons like the war fork and the Broad sword will not be dealing you substantial dmg – especially considering dmg rendered to the weapon by the corrosion of high level poison’s. Only use GC’s when in need. If your life is high you are poisoned and the bandage is about to resolve let the bandage cure the poison. If you life is a little low after drink a GH instead. GC are you most precious resource. It may come down to simply whether you have more GC, or conversely he has more TR.
Parry Macer
In general follow the basic strategies outlined under Axer heading. Is usually determined by who is better equipped. The MOST important resource you have - in parry macer fights - are shields. Even naked, equipped with a kite shield you amount to a substantial threat; second most important are TR potions. TR potions = mobility use them only when totally necessary or if you’ve run out of shields and need an edge.
If you run out of shields the battle in not necessarily lost. Switch to the war hammer and joust. Also use the precasting bandage disruption technique proscribed earlier. MB is also effective and can be precast or used as a finishing spell – MB is not affected by the eval bonus. War hammers will eat through the toughest shield relatively quickly and when coupled with poison they pose a serious threat. Also jousting will ensure your stm is not drained at a disproportional rate, nor will parity develop in armour damage. Be ready for a long fight folks.
All other Dexers and Med Warriors
Simple follow the general directions proscribed under the Axer header. In these instances you have the definite advantage and should not be in any real danger.
-Hope that Helps.
