The only thing AI was missing was tons of players. I think the fact that the shard failed despite having 160 players online regularly immediately following the wipe is a pretty good indication that changes needed to be made before the shard would sustain a population similar to Second Age. I'm not saying it wasn't the best I've played, but there were some issues that needed/need to be addressed in order to make it appeal to the masses.

There's shards out there that don't cater to those cries and have many many more players than AI ever did.

AI, as an emulation of a niche ruleset in a 10+ year old game really did well to have the playerbase that it did, imo. What changes do you think AI could have made that would have improved its appeal? Actually AI is not an emulation of any pre-existing ruleset, but more an expression of Adam's vision for what UO should have been. And just like when OSI used to change things that people didn't want changed, or didn't change things that people did want changed, or banned people for things that seemed trivial, or didn't ban people for things that seemed serious ... folks quit, and the population dwindled. The difference for OSI is that they were still able to draw in new people to the game and the new expansions were a big part of that. If you have a new game on the shelves, people will buy it. In the case of AI, if you want to know what should have been done differently, you'd have to talk to the backbone guilds that supplied the constant population necessary to support the server. Guilds like PAG, GUL, Orc, Und, KV, EV, and many others that have basically come, morphed, and passed.

Oh, so if Adam would have gave in and changed the shard to the specifications of the leet Siege drama queens, all would have been lovely. Got it. Forgive me for expecting a serious response. Maybe the next incarnation of AI will have a corrupt admin with no vision like 99.999% of player-run shards and will therefore be a great success! Here's wishin'!

I think surly is right. With code as good as this, how could you possibly expect to have a good population? There was nothing that could have been done.
But really, there's no sense in arguing about the what ifs at this point. It's over. It will almost certainly be revived in some form at some point. We'll see how those pan out.
Also, if there's anyone out there that needs an experienced admin or some PR work/advertisement throw me a PM. I'd love to help out.
Or if you have some dev skills and you just want to code but not manage, also toss me a PM.

A good admin is one who listens, not just does as they think is best. Take that from 7 years of it
